 30 May 2009

Hello, my name is Debbie Lowndes and I am honored to be your Auxiliary President this year. I realize this is not an easy task entrusted to me, but I promise to give my best to our Unit and Post. I plan to draw on the experience of our current & past Presidents, Commanders, and husband (Joe) who has served two terms as commander, First Vice Commander, Sergeant at Arms and Executive Officer. My commitment is for the health and well being of active duty & retired military and our community.

I have two daughters. My 26 year old (Chrystle) is an Administrator with the Boys & Girls Club of Alaska and my 19 year old (Candice) was attending college in Utah and is soon headed back home. I am an officer for 1st National Bank of Alaska and work for the Vice President of Special Credits.

An awesome team will be serving with me; Audie Reynolds as First Vice, Mary Suellentrop as Second Vice, Linda Schmitt as Secretary, Tammy Rosin as Treasurer, Kathy Richardson as Sgt at Arms, Rae Strosin as Chaplain, Gaye Lavelle, Dixie Bolgiano and Patty Duchesreau as Executive Committee. I hope to encourage and increase communication with my team, SAL and Legion. Where communications fails, so do we.

We have several great volunteers in our Auxiliary that are always there to help and get the job done no matter what the task. The American Legion is the world’s largest veteran’s organization; this year I hope to see an increase in amount of volunteers we have participating indicating our strength and size. Everyone has something that can be contributed to our Unit. We need you.

We have had great success at our children's Christmas and Easter parties. I would like to see a new enthusiasm put into our Junior membership program this year. Let's develop our program on Americanism for our Juniors. We will need volunteers to teach our daughters, granddaughters and nieces the principals behind the American Legion and it’s Auxiliary.

Whether you're a long-time member or a new member don't be surprised this year when I ask for your help with a project, because everyone can and should contribute something to our Post and Community.

For God and Country,

Debbie Lowndes

Greetings Legionnaires, Auxiliary and S.A.L Members!
Thank you. I would like to personally thank those that have renewed membership. I encourage those that have yet to renew to come on out or send in your application. Presently, 43 percent of our members have renewed – but we encourage all our members to join now - if we wait too much longer our Post 33 will be charged an additional $4.50 per member because of Department fee increases.
Hot News! We have a website! Go to http://www.post33.org to preview. It is an awesome site that is about 60% complete, but fully functional at this time. Send us your suggestions. As of now we have sections for the Legion, Auxiliary, SAL, history, membership, benefits, officers, programs, photos, community, flag etiquette, boosters, sponsors, scholarships, and more! With the new website comes the advantage of having your newsletter online or emailed to you directly. We want your email address so we may email the newsletter instead of mailing. E-mailing, or having you access the site for your news, will save your post a lot of money besides allowing us to keep you better and more timely informed as to the goings on at Post 33. Please email your information to alpost33@alaska.com as soon as possible. We must hear from you either way or it will be assumed you are receiving newsletters via email or website. You may also call or write and inform us of your choice ….. Snail-mail or email.  The mailing address is American Legion Post 33, P.O. Box 670118, Chugiak, AK  99567
It’s time for supper …. Friday nights from 6 to 9 pm. With the new kitchen and dining area/meeting hall up and running, we now have a full menu of your favorites. With Friday night dinners, we are looking to expand the operation to Thursday night sandwiches, Sunday breakfast, and Monday night finger foods or pot-luck. With all this, we are in need of your help. Volunteers are needed to work for all these shifts …. The sooner the volunteers happen - the faster we can expand services. Can you help cook, set-up, serve, bus tables, clean, or do dishes?   If so please contact Fred Richardson or Linda Schmitt at the Post.
What’s Happening? To name a few: Bring in your sealed game no later than 4 Sep 06 so we may send over a care package to the men and women in the “sand-box”.  Post 33 does have a good number of active duty serving in the desert and more headed over as you read this letter. Labor Day Pig Roast and Jam session is 4 Sep 06 @ 2 pm. Highway cleanup is 9 Sep 06 at 10 am. Early Bird Dinner is 14 Oct 06 at 5 pm. Also, the CERTA dart league is picking up again on Wednesday nights and “Blind Draw” on Saturdays.
Right-On! In closing, again, as I have said in previous letters, I would like to personally thank those of you that helped our Post. Without you, we would not have had the canteen and kitchen up and running after such a tragic fire. An amazing and impressive task. We are not finished, only beginning a new era. We want your business and volunteerism. This is your call to arms. We have a task in front of us that is what we all want and desire to ensure the health and well being of our post and community. Will you stand-up, step forward and volunteer?

According to Chugiak Fire Department Spokesman Jeff Hartley, the call of a fire at the building came in about 4:30 p.m. Sunday.
"We arrived to find heavy smoke in the kitchen," Hartley said. "We made entry and began to fight the fire."
Hartley said 13 Chugiak units and a ladder truck from the Anchorage Fire Department fought the blaze. It was confined to the kitchen and a small area of the dining hall.
Joe Lowndes, commander of the post, said about 70 people were at a barbecue at the post when the fire started. He said someone noticed smoke coming from the kitchen, which was not being used at the time, and the fire department was called.
"We got everyone out safe," he said.
The cause of the fire is uncertain, said Hartley. Lowndes said he estimated more than $200,000 in damage occurred, but was waiting for word from an insurance adjuster.
The kitchen of the post is much older than the rest of the facility, said Lowndes. The addition of the dining hall and cantina was completed in 2002.
Lowndes said the cantina is still usable, but the dining facility will need to be cleaned out and partially rebuilt. The kitchen is a total loss.
Lowndes said donations were being accepted to help rebuild the lodge. Donations can be made to American Legion Post 33, P.O. Box 670118, Chugiak, AK 99567.
